A Christian nurse in the United Kingdom was suspended from her job after an investigation into her referring to a transgender patient—who is also a convicted pedophile—as "mister."
Jennifer Melle, 40, faced disciplinary action for not using the patient's preferred gender identity during an incident at a hospital in South London.
The suspension by Epsom and St. Helier University Hospitals followed an altercation during Melle’s night shift at St Helier Hospital on May 22, 2024. The patient, identified as Mr. X, is serving a sentence in a high-security men's prison for sexually exploiting boys, according to a statement from Christian Concern, a rights group providing legal support to Melle.
Mr. X, who identifies as female, became furious when Melle used male pronouns while consulting a doctor about his medical care. The patient then verbally abused Melle with racial slurs and threatened her physically before being restrained by hospital guards.
In response, the hospital trust launched an investigation, asserting that Melle violated the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s code of conduct by failing to respect Mr. X’s preferred gender identity.
The investigation report stated that nurses must avoid imposing personal beliefs and must recognize diversity and individual choice. As a result, Melle was issued a final written warning and referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, where she was labeled a "potential risk."
