At least 40 farmers were killed in an attack by Islamic militants in Borno state, northeastern Nigeria, a government official reported on Monday.
The attack, which took place on Sunday, is believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram extremists and a splinter group aligned with the Islamic State in the Dumba community, according to Borno state Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.
He urged civilians to remain within designated “safe zones” cleared by the military of extremists and explosives.
Zulum also called on the armed forces to investigate the incident thoroughly and take action against the perpetrators.
“I assure the people of Borno that this matter will be thoroughly investigated, and necessary actions will follow. I also urge the armed forces to track down and deal decisively with those responsible for this heinous act against our innocent citizens,” he said.
Boko Haram, Nigeria’s domestic jihadist group, launched its insurgency in 2009, aiming to oppose Western education and enforce its radical interpretation of Islamic law.
