The Meloni government has prevented nearly 200,000 migrants from crossing the Mediterranean to Italy over the past two years, according to the country’s interior minister.

Italy has provided hundreds of millions of euros in aid, trade, and investment to Tunisia and Libya. In return, both nations have taken measures to prevent migrant boats from departing their shores.

However, campaigners have criticized Tunisia for allegedly rounding up sub-Saharan migrants and abandoning them in the desert, while Libya faces accusations of detaining migrants in unsanitary centers where they endure torture and beatings.

“It is a positive outcome, supported by the data,” said Matteo Piantedosi, Italy’s interior minister under Giorgia Meloni’s Right-wing government. Speaking to La Stampa newspaper, he noted, “In 2024, we reduced irregular arrivals by 60% compared to the previous year and by 38% compared to 2022.”
