Israeli President Isaac Herzog stated on Sunday that the United Nations has a "moral obligation" to help secure the release of the 100 hostages held by Hamas and other Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip.
Herzog described the suffering of the hostages, citing terms like "torture," "starvation," "sexual abuse," and "beatings" from the Israeli Ministry of Health’s submission to the U.N., which detailed the brutal treatment the hostages endured at the hands of Hamas.
This week, the Israeli Health Ministry will submit a report to Alice Jill Edwards, the U.N. special rapporteur on torture, which will include testimonies from hostages who have returned, recounting the physical and psychological abuse they suffered since October 7, 2023. These testimonies will describe the severe treatment, including sexual violence, starvation, and other atrocities inflicted by Hamas terrorists.
The report raises questions about whether the U.N. will take action in response to the torture and starvation of hostages. Will the General Assembly condemn Hamas for these war crimes and demand the immediate release of the remaining hostages? Or will attention remain focused on accusations against Israel, despite the lack of evidence for claims of "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide" against the people of Gaza?
