Berlin – A deadly knife attack and subsequent police shooting in Berlin have been revealed by the public prosecutor’s office on Sunday afternoon.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the incident began at the Kaiserdamm subway station. At approximately 4:30 p.m., the 29-year-old German victim and the 43-year-old Syrian assailant boarded a U12 train bound for Warschauer Straße, each independently of the other.

An altercation broke out between them shortly after. "For reasons that remain unclear, a dispute escalated rapidly, with the 43-year-old initiating a series of pushes," a spokesperson stated.

The victim managed to drag himself onto the platform.

The situation intensified when the assailant drew a kitchen knife from his waistband and stabbed the victim three times.

"One of the wounds struck the victim’s sternum, severing a ventricle of the heart, leading to his death," the spokesperson confirmed after the immediate autopsy conducted that evening.

The injured man managed to crawl out of the train at Sophie-Charlotte-Platz station, but collapsed on the platform.

Meanwhile, the assailant fled, running out of the subway station toward Schloßstraße, where he was confronted by police officers and threatened them with the knife.

An officer fired several shots, hitting the assailant three times—once in the thigh, once in the torso, and once in the neck.

Despite emergency surgery, the 43-year-old died from his injuries around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.

As per protocol in cases of fatal shootings, an investigation is underway against the officer on suspicion of manslaughter. The public prosecutor’s office noted that the case against the attacker is likely to be dropped.

There is currently no evidence suggesting that the assault was motivated by Islamist terrorism, according to the prosecutor’s office.

A witness at a nearby beer garden recalled seeing the assailant fleeing, stating: “He was dressed in black, holding the knife above his head and waving it around. He ran erratically, as if on drugs.”

Once again, police were forced to neutralize an armed suspect with gunfire.

It is worth noting that both individuals have prior police and judicial records, having previously been apprehended for offenses including assault, resisting arrest, and violations of the Narcotics Act.

The statement concludes with a note that there is currently no information available regarding the Syrian man’s residency status.
