Two men, one from Gaza and the other from Lebanon, have been charged in connection with an antisemitic attack in Berlin in February, targeting a non-Jewish man, the Berlin State Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday. The victim was reportedly attacked because of the attackers' perception of his religious identity, with the assailants allegedly chanting “he should die because he is a Jew” during the assault.
The men face charges of "dangerous bodily harm," as the prosecutor indicated that the alleged perpetrators demonstrated a "withdrawal from the intent to kill," which, under German law, prevents a more serious charge from being filed.
The accused, along with several unidentified individuals, allegedly approached the 37-year-old victim in Berlin’s Neukölln district, striking him repeatedly in the head and upper body. Despite the chants, the victim was not Jewish, as confirmed by the prosecutor’s office.
The incident, which occurred in mid-February, has garnered attention due to its antisemitic overtones. Although death threats were issued by the attackers, they did not carry out further actions, leading prosecutors to refrain from pursuing attempted murder charges.
