The bomber, on trial for terrorism, spoke in the final moments this Monday in Paris. He justified his actions without showing any remorse.

Mohamed Hichem Medjdoub, 29, who had remained silent throughout his trial, finally addressed the court. He was being tried by the Paris Special Assize Court for the May 2019 attack on Rue Victor-Hugo in the 2nd arrondissement of Lyon. Medjdoub spoke on Monday, April 7, just hours before the verdict was announced. His words were striking in their defiance.

“All objectives were achieved, and I have no regrets,” he declared confidently, according to AFP. Before the judges, the man charged with attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise fully acknowledged his actions. “I am not a coward,” he emphasized, declaring a “total victory.”

On May 24, 2019, just two days before the European elections, this radicalized Algerian planted a homemade bomb in a brown bag in front of a Brioche Dorée bakery on Rue Victor-Hugo in central Lyon. The device, packed with metal projectiles, injured around 15 people, including a 10-year-old girl.

During the investigation, Mohamed Hichem Medjdoub admitted that his intent was to instill fear and support a far-right victory, hoping it would lead to a civil war. However, Attorney General Nicolas Braconnay stated, “If his bomb didn’t kill anyone, it was purely a coincidence.” He requested a life sentence with a 22-year mandatory period.

Medjdoub dismissed the charges and taunted the prosecutor: “You don’t impress me, you don’t scare anyone.” He went on to say, “As a Muslim, an Arab, and especially an Algerian, I have no moral lessons to learn from the French.”

Characterized as “narcissistic” and “dangerous” by experts, the defendant maintained a provocative stance until the very end.

After five hours of deliberation, the verdict was finally delivered on Monday around 3 p.m. Mohamed Hichem Medjdoub was found guilty of attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
